MILKY CHANCE – FAIRYTALE LYRIC VIDEO
MILKY CHANCE – FAIRYTALE LYRIC VIDEO
Kolam Susu Studio got a chance to make an animated lyric video for a folktronica band from Germany—Milky Chance, for their song “Fairytale”. The collaboration started from an initiative to visualize “Fairytale” song into concept art. Then, we developed a story, characters, and world-building for “Fairytale”.
We believe what we have made is worth telling, and we want to share it. We tried to connect with Milky Chance, and they love our concept for Fairytale! and voilà! The collaboration happened. It took us 6 weeks to make “Fairytale” lyric video. It was released on 9 February 2023 through Milky Chance’s official youtube channel.
Fairytale lyric video tells about a journey to find true self, so we want the art style to look raw and bold. We try to translate the music into these colors and use limited colors to balance the detailed art style.
—
The boy and the red-headed boy are the two main characters in this lyric video. The boy should overcome all his fears and struggles to become a better version of himself. One night, he dreams about a journey to the moon with Red-headed Boy–his future self who comes from the moon. His future self is his fairytale.
Besides the two main characters, there are side characters who The brief for this creature’s character design is to visualize creatures based on 5 human traits. The creatures are the symbolism of the boy’s fears and struggles. For the lyric video, we choose two creatures: Furious and Insecurity.
The Moon
The moon is a dark mythical land, a snow-like world with many mysterious creatures hiding inside it. The moon has a spiral shape. The deeper level has the most bizarre creatures. Everything that shows exists inside the boy’s mind.
The Red Plane
The red plane is inspired by a spaceplane and an insect that only has one-day-cycle life. The insect symbolises the character’s journey in a one-night dream.
Switching medium from short film to music video/lyric video, we sorted out which ones from existing materials or concept art were suitable for further development.
Even though the brief was making a lyric video, we tried to make a short film in the form of a lyric video because the “Fairytale” song gave us space to build a story. The lyrics are there, but you can look at it or just enjoy the story or the visuals.
One of the challenging processes was balancing the portion of the lyrics and the rest of the visual without losing the focal point.
